AZERBAIJANI PARLIAMENT ELECTS NEW SPEAKER.

Murtuz Aleskerov was elected yesterday to the post of chairman of the Milli Majlis, a post which is second only to that of president in Azerbaijan«s political system. Aleskerov, 68, is a Moscow-trained professor of law and currently rector of Baku University. He was a prominent member of the original Popular Front in 1990-91, but left it and in 1992 helped launch the public campaign for the return of Haidar Aliev from Nakhichevan to Baku. Aleskerov was the sole candidate for the parliament’s chairmanship, but Aliev and the governing Yeni (New) Azerbaijan party are known to have been actively considering other possibilities.
