BUDANOV TRIAL STALLS AGAIN.

On April 2, the court of the North Caucasus Military District declared yet another recess in the trial of Colonel Yury Budanov, charged with the murder of an 18-year-old Chechen woman, El’za Kungaeva. The trial, which began in February of 2001, will resume on May 14. One of Budanov’s lawyers, Aleksei Dulimov, predicted confidently that Budanov will be freed from prison by July 1 at the latest–that is, the date on which the new Criminal Procedural Code of the Russian Federation is set to go into effect (Kommersant, April 3).
