GRU STEPS UP INTELLIGENCE-GATHERING IN NATO COUNTRIES.

Boris Yeltsin has reportedly ordered the GRU military intelligence and other intelligence agencies to step up operations in NATO countries. A Russian daily newspaper claims knowledge of orders to spy on NATO headquarters, specifically the office of NATO Secretary General Willi Claes, on nuclear forces, and on British and French military bases in Europe. The orders also encompass the Baltic states. Earlier in the week, MI-5 chief Stella Remington’s said that Russian intelligence has recently intensified its activity in Britain. (7)
