The British Foreign Office says it can not confirm the assertion by a top Chechen law enforcement officer that two British aid workers kidnapped in Chechnya during the summer are "alive and well." Magomed Magomadov, head of Chechnya’s special antiterrorist investigation team, announced last week that he had information that the husband and wife medical team, Jon James and Camilla Carr, remain in captivity but are unharmed. A Foreign Office spokesman said he hoped the news was true but had no information to support it. (Itar-Tass, December 12) Five foreigners are currently being held captive in Chechnya: two Britons, two Hungarians, and one Turk.
