Soldiers for Democracy, a reformist Russian military association, has urged its followers to vote for Boris Yeltsin in tomorrow’s presidential election. Valentin Smirnov, a leader of the group, praised Yeltsin for his recent changes of policy and personnel in Russia’s "power" ministries. He also said the group trusted that the president’s calls for civilian control over the defense ministry and a transition to a professional army were not empty campaign promises. (Interfax, July 1)
