MOSCOW MOVES TO EASE CONCERNS OVER IRAN NUCLEAR PLANT PROJECT.

Russia’s deputy minister for nuclear energy Lev Ryabev toldInterfax August 7 that Russia and Iran are in the process of amendingtheir agreement on building a Russian-equipped nuclear power plantat Bushehr on the Persian Gulf. The main amendments are expectedto provide for deliveries of Russian nuclear fuel to Iran, forIran’s return of the used nuclear fuel to Russia, and for wasteprocessing in Russia. These additions to the agreement were discussedby the minister, Viktor Mikhailov, in Tehran August 1 through7. They appear aimed at assuaging Western concerns over potentialmisuse of the plant by Iran to produce nuclear weapons.
