The head of the OSCE’s mission in Grozny, Tim Guldimann, was reported yesterday to have held talks with Russian prime minister Viktor Chernomyrdin in Moscow and then to have flown back to Chechnya for confidential meetings with Chechen leaders in the mountains. After the latter meetings, it was reported that he would again brief Chernomyrdin in Moscow. Senior Russian policymakers took part in the Moscow meeting with Guldimann. Meanwhile, Chechnya’s Supreme Soviet has resolved to organize legislative elections in the republic on June 16, simultaneously with Russia’s presidential election. (Interfax, Itar-Tass, May 13)
