RUSSIAN MILITARY ECHOES FELIX GROUP ON THREAT TO BALTICS.

Russian military expert Anton Surikov of the Institute of Defense Research said that if NATO expands eastward the Kremlin may be forced to reoccupy the Baltic states to prevent them from being incorporated into the Western alliance. Surikov observed that his position was nothing new, that it had already been advanced in the mass media by senior Russian general staff officers. (10)

Surikov’s comments are of interest not so much for their substance, but because they echo the positions taken by the notorious Felix Group, allegedly composed of former KGB officers. In February, the Felix Group proposed in the neo-imperialist weekly Zavtra that if NATO expanded eastward, Russia should reoccupy the Baltic states and redeploy its tactical nuclear weapons towards its eastern border.
