Three Russian officers have dropped out of the presidential race, the Central Election Commission announced April 5. They are the commander of Russia’s Far Eastern Military District, General Viktor Chechevatov; a Duma deputy and former deputy defense minister, Boris Gromov; and the head of the ultranationalist Officers’ Union, Stanislav Terekhov. Chechevatov’s campaign group had reportedly raised more than one million signatures. Officials from that group urged voters to cast their ballots for Boris Yeltsin. (Interfax, April 5)
