YELTSIN CONTINUES REORGANIZATION OF SECURITY SERVICES.

BorisYeltsin resubordinated the Main Protection Service (GUO) to hisown Presidential Security Service (SBP) and promoted that group’schief, Aleksandr Korzhakov, to the rank of lieutenant general,Ostankino television reported July 28. At the same time, Yeltsinnamed GUO chief Maj. Gen. Yuri Krapivin and new Kremlin commandantSergei Strygin as Korzhakov’s deputies. A spokesman for Yeltsin’soffice said that the Federal Agency of Government Communicationand Information (FAPSI) might be subordinated to the Federal SecurityService (FSB) and its new director, Mikhail Barsukov, but thespokesman warned against reading any political meaning into thistightening of presidential control over Russian security services.
