Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 85

President Boris Yeltsin addressed a crowd of some five thousand trade unionists in downtown Moscow today, and promised them his leadership would ensure that all wage arrears were made good. In a separate demonstration across town, Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov led some five thousand demonstrators (about a quarter of the number organizers had predicted) from a statue of Lenin to the bust of Karl Marx near the Bolshoi Theater. Security was tight, but both demonstrations were said to have passed off peacefully. (Reuter, Interfax, BBC, May 1)
