YOUNG FRONT DEMONSTRATES IN MINSK ON INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY.

Several thousand Belarusans, mostly young people, demonstrated in central Minsk yesterday for the country’s independence and against dictatorship. The Popular Front’s affiliate Young Front was the main organizer of the event. Police were present in force to intimidate the public. (NTV, July 27) July 27 is the anniversary of the 1990 declaration of Belarusan sovereignty. The day was a public holiday until 1996, when President Alyaksandr Lukashenka replaced it with the anniversary of the Red Army’s entry into Minsk.
