TAJIK GOVERNMENT DECLARES VICTORY OVER MUTINEERS.
Tajik president Imomali Rahmonov’s chief spokesman, Zafir Saidov, and his chief military adviser, Mizrob Kabirov, announced yesterday that government forces have virtually liquidated the military mutiny which began last month and which led to large-scale hostilities beginning on August 9. The officials stated that government troops had succeeded in dispersing the rebel 1st Army brigade and its Popular Front supporters into small groups, some of which laid down arms and surrendered. As of yesterday, remainders of rebel forces were on the run in areas bordering on Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. The 1st brigade’s commander, Col. Mahmud Hudoberdiev, eluded encirclement with a small armored column near the Uzbek border.
