The Jamestown Foundation is seeking writers for its China Brief, Militant Leadership Monitor, and Terrorism Monitor publications. Interested writers are invited to submit proposals for articles suited to these publications. In addition to a description of a proposed article, authors are encouraged to submit a short piece of published work in English and a CV/Resume describing prior experience in the field.

Our analysts have experience in their field and must be proficient in the use of relevant indigenous sources.

Writing guidelines for specific publications can be found below. Prospective authors are highly encouraged to review them before submitting an article.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT


Position Title: Director of Development and Special Events

The Jamestown Foundation is seeking a full-time Director of Development and Special Events. Reporting to the President, the position will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic development plan to substantially increase major and planned gifts from individuals as well as donations or other support from corporations, foundations, and other grant-giving organizations. In addition, the position will assist in planning and running The Jamestown Foundation’s conferences and special events.

The position will be instrumental in developing a fundraising program to ensure The Jamestown Foundation’s long-term growth and financial stability. This will include developing donor relations and cultivating strategic relationships. The position is based at The Jamestown Foundation’s offices in Washington, D.C. Travel will be required to meet with and engage donors across the United States.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In addition to other duties that may be assigned in the future, the position will have the following responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the President to develop, implement, and manage a proactive and effective major gifts strategy and program on an ongoing basis, including all activities relating to the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual major and planned gift prospects.
  • Work with the President to design and write thoughtful cases for support and detailed donor proposals for major and planned gifts donors.
  • Work with the President and Board of Directors to identify, cultivate, and solicit corporate, foundation, and other grant-giving partners to support Jamestown’s mission.
  • Work with the President and Board of Directors on strategy for the solicitation of major donors as appropriate.
  • Work with the Jamestown staff and analysts to cultivate their role in development.
  • Maintain appropriate systems for donor tracking and activity monitoring to ensure that cultivation and solicitation strategies are successfully implemented and goals are met.
  • Provide regular reports and analysis to the President and Board of Directors to evaluate the effectiveness of Jamestown’s fundraising efforts.
  • Represent Jamestown at on-site and off-site events with donors and potential donors.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated success in identifying, cultivating, and raising individual, corporate, and/or foundation gifts in a non-profit organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and nurture long-term relationships with donors and prospects and to develop appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies for each.
  • A goal-oriented manager of the solicitation and cultivation process with strong organizational skills.
  • A strategic thinker who has demonstrated resourcefulness in working collaboratively in a team environment with various constituencies.
  • Ability to articulate the case for support orally and in writing, and to interact with Jamestown Foundation leadership, donors, and prospects at the highest level.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as necessary.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.

Position Title: Russia & Eurasia Research and Editing Internship

The Jamestown Foundation is offering a paid internship contingent on the availability to work at least 15 hours a week starting in August 2024 running until the end of December (with the option to extend). Duties include copy-editing and fact-checking Eurasia Daily Monitor articles, providing editorial support on special reports and book chapters, updating the Jamestown website, assisting in outreach to the Russia and Eurasia policy community via social media, researching topics related to security in Europe and Eurasia, updating ongoing newsletters, and assisting with the organization and execution of periodic conferences and events. The ideal candidate will be a current graduate student with an interest in Eurasian affairs and Russian, Central/Eastern European, or Turkic language proficiency. Exceptional undergraduates with editorial experience and language proficiency will also be considered.

The intern must be able to work in person at the Jamestown offices in Washington, D.C.

  • Close attention to detail and the ability to work effectively with minimal oversight on issues related to Russia’s war against Ukraine, developments in the Caucasus and Black Sea region, as well as military-security affairs.
  • Experience with event planning for online and in-person events related to Russia and Eurasia.
  • Excellent research skills and a solid understanding of political, security, and economic developments and trends in the post-Soviet space and wider Eurasia.
  • Confident knowledge of American English grammar rules and experience with proofreading and copy-editing materials written by nonnative English speakers.
  • Must be a US citizen, permanent legal resident or otherwise legally permitted to work in the United States.
  • Able to devote a minimum of 15 hours a week for the duration of the internship to assist with research and copy-editing duties and to help out on other ongoing Jamestown projects.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in written and spoken English at a professional level.
  • Working proficiency in Russian, Ukrainian, another Central/Eastern European, or Turkic language preferred. Other language skills will also be considered.

The Jamestown Foundation is offering a paid internship on for fall 2024. The intern will support the Editor of China Brief in preparing and disseminating their publication.

The internship is expected to align with the standard academic calendar, with the fall internship lasting from mid-August to mid-December (with the option to extend). Jamestown is willing to consider applications from candidates who would desire to work beyond this timeframe. Interns are expected to work at least 12–15 hours a week.

Duties include copy-editing, updating the Jamestown website, and assisting in outreach to the policy community via social media, as well as assisting Jamestown with the organization and execution of periodic conferences and events.

The ideal candidate will be a current graduate student with an interest in East Asian affairs and Chinese language proficiency. Exceptional undergraduates will also be considered.

The intern must be able to work in person at the Jamestown offices in Washington, D.C. This internship is not remote.

Position Title: Fall 2024 Development and Communications Internship

The Jamestown Foundation is offering a paid internship on for fall 2024. The intern will support The Jamestown Foundation in coordinating and executing the organization’s communications and development strategies.

The internship is expected to align with the standard academic calendar, with the fall internship lasting from mid-August to mid-December. Jamestown is willing to consider applications from candidates who would desire to work beyond this timeframe. Interns are expected to work at least 12–15 hours a week.

The primary responsibility of the Development and Communications Intern is to support the promotion of organizational events and ongoing communication with donors and media partners. The intern will also maintain Jamestown’s presence on social media platforms and help to publish relevant content, primarily through Facebook and Twitter. Other duties may also be assigned as needed. These may include but are not limited to drafting press releases, managing a donor database, or assisting Jamestown’s various publications with content production.

The ideal candidate will be a current undergraduate student with an interest in either East Asian or Eurasian affairs as well as a desire to gain hands-on experience working at small a non-profit organization. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in graphic design.

The intern must be able to work in person at the Jamestown offices in Washington, D.C. This internship is not remote.
