ZYUGANOV GETS UNUSUAL BACKING.

Gennady Zyuganov’s election campaign has received surprise backing from the prominent critic of Soviet society, Aleksandr Zinoviev. Zinoviev, who spent the last years of the Soviet period in exile in Germany, told Russian Television he was supporting Zyuganov because the Communist party leader is not a Communist of the old type but "a new phenomenon of the post-Communist epoch."(RTR, June 26) Zinoviev has long delighted in stirring controversy, calling himself anti-Stalinist under Stalin but angering many by defending Stalin’s achievements during the Gorbachev years.
