Where are my guarantees?” President Alyaksandr Lukashenka whined in a remarkable interview. Russian fickleness toward Slobodan Milosevic (see above) is worrisome. “If you invited Djukanovic today, maybe you will invite [Belarusan opposition leader Semyon] Sharetsky tomorrow.” So: no Russia-Belarus union without “Belarus preserving its sovereignty. …Even Stalin,” he said, speaking fondly of one of his role models, “did not go so far as to deprive Belarus of sovereignty.” Sovereignty for Belarus means Lukashenka as sovereign. He intends to be reelected president in 2001, he said.
