Over 10,000 American tourists refrained from visiting St. Petersburg in recent weeks, after the U.S. consulate in the city warned that it had information about possible terrorist attacks against Americans. St. Petersburg mayor Anatoly Sobchak told Russia’s Radio on August 31 that this was "a shameless fabrication directed against the economy of this city." The Federal Security Service’s (FSB) Leningrad regional administration said in a press release that the US consulate in St. Petersburg had been misinformed by a Russian with an extensive criminal record. The regional FSB said that it had filed a criminal case against that person, and that it has no information of its own about any possible dangers to Americans in St. Petersburg, Ostankino TV reported August 31.
