SCIENTISTS APPEAL TO RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT.

Nuclear scientists in Russia called on the Russian government yesterday to take urgent steps to fund scientific research establishments. The call was in response to the apparent suicide of a leading nuclear weapons scientist, Vladimir Nechai. The 60-year-old Nechai headed Russia’s second largest nuclear research institute in the formerly secret city of Chelyabinsk-70 in the Urals. He was found dead in his office late Wednesday. Colleagues said he was under stress since workers on his staff had not been paid for five months. (ORT, BBC, Interfax, October 31)
