TOYOTA CONSIDERING PRODUCTION IN RUSSIA.

Japan’s Toyota Motor Corporation announced yesterday that it is investigating the possibility of producing commercial vehicles in Russia. Earlier in the day Japan’s largest newspaper, the Yomiuri Shimbun, reported that Toyota is likely by the end of the year to start manufacturing multipurpose vans at a plant near Moscow. Toyota denied another report in a different publication saying that it intends to join with the Japanese trading house Mitsui and Company to produce vehicles at a factory outside of Moscow that once made military equipment. (AP, April 20) During this past weekend’s summit meeting in Japan, Russian President Boris Yeltsin and Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto announced that the governments of the two countries would consider construction of a Japanese automobile factory near Moscow.
