The G-8 summit in Birmingham saw fit to issue a statement calling on Ukraine to shut down all reactors at Chernobyl by the year 2000. The summiteers did not see fit to recall their 1995 pledge (as the then G-7) to provide Ukraine $3 billion in loans and grants to get the job done. Virtually none of that money has been made available.
