UKRAINIAN CURRENCY DELAYED AGAIN.

The Ukrainian national currency is unlikely to debut in 1996, Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma’s new chief aide Volodymyr Kuznetsov said yesterday. The hryvnia will not be launched due to the country’s lack of financial and economic stability, he said. Kuznetsov approved Kuchma’s decision last summer to postpone the currency’s introduction pending further economic reform and a lowering of inflation. On another subject, Kuznetsov said Ukraine plans to strengthen bilateral ties with Russia and other CIS countries in 1996, but does not intend to join the CIS payments or customs unions. (5)
