Jamestown President Glen Howard Interviewed by NPR on Belarus

Jamestown President Glen E. Howard was interviewed by NPR journalist Michele Keleman on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visit to Belarus, and the country’s strategic position in Eastern Europe. Released on February 1, Howard said that Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka wishes to remain neutral in the struggle between Russia and NATO, wanting to remain like a “Slavic Switzerland.” Such independent tendencies are similar to Tito, as like the late Communist leader of Yugoslavia, Lukashenka is willing to go against Putin’s wishes in Moscow in order to ensure his own country’s sovereignty.
