BRYANSK RESIDENTS TEAR DOWN WALL TO PROTEST PRIVILEGES OF "NEW RUSSIANS."

Residents in the Russian city ofBryansk, possibly egged on by local communists, tore down a barrieraround a construction site where housing was being built for thenewly wealthy portions of that city’s population and have demandedthat they be given a veto over all such future construction, Russiantelevision reported August 18. Meanwhile, Rossiiskaya gazetaon August 16 suggested that the Bryansk problem was part ofa more general one: the paper noted that "while most Russiancitizens acquire nothing from privatization, directors and officialsget ‘fabulous’ dividends using the advantages of their posts." The paper added that the State Property Committee and the Dumahad been unwilling to do anything about this.
