FINANCIERS WANT PIECE OF GOVERNMENT ACTION.

A group of leading Russian financiers and businessmen has proposed the creation of an Economic Council that would have the right to propose legislation to the government and to parliament. The proposal was put forth yesterday by Sergei Yegorov, president of the Association of Russian Banks (which represents Russia’s 2,000 commercial banks). It was supported by Arkady Volsky, chairman of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, which represents the interests of Russia’s heavy industry and defense sectors. (Interfax, July 4)
