NEW UNITY FOR ALL CIS STATES?

Commonwealth of Independent States ExecutiveSecretary Ivan Korotcheniya told Itar-Tass May 17 that the Russian andBelarusian presidents would sign a document at the May 26 Minsk meetingestablishing closer ties between the economies of their countries and thatthis document would be open for other CIS countries to sign as well. Thatseems unlikely to happen soon, as even Korotcheniya implies: he noted thatsome of the 12 member states had called for the Minsk meeting to be postponedfor up to three months because the necessary documents had not been prepared.
