SHUTTLE DOCKS WITH TROUBLED SPACE STATION.

Following a smooth docking on September 27, their respective crews yesterday continued to move thousands of pounds of cargo from the U.S. shuttle Atlantis onto the Russian space station Mir. A replacement for Mir’s central computer, which has failed three times over the past three weeks, was one of the first items unloaded. The docking marks the end of U.S. astronaut Michael Foale’s four-and-a-half-month stint on the station, and the beginning of a planned four-month mission there for astronaut David Wolfe. Atlantis is to depart Mir on October 3. (Reuter, AP, September 29)
