THE BELL TOLLS FOR LENIN.

Latvia’s town of Ventspils, hoping to duplicate the recent success of Liepaja, seeks to sell its Lenin monument for cash to Western buyers. Those statues fetch a good price for their bronze and are well suited for recycling into bells. A specialized German firm recently melted Liepaja’s Lenin into bells. Those bells have just had their successful commercial presentation in the city of Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany. (BNS, July 14) Darmstadt happens to have been the birthplace and residence of Alexandra, Grand Duchess of Hesse, who became Empress of Russia and was murdered by Lenin’s comrades.
