YELTSIN SEES WAR THREAT IN NATO ENLARGEMENT.

On September 8, in his first full-scale news conference in almost a year, President Boris Yeltsin linked NATO’s retaliatory strikes against the Bosnian Serbs to the alliance’s planned enlargement, predicting: "This [bombing] is the first sign of what could happen when NATO comes right up to the Russian Federation’s borders…The flame of war could burst out across the whole of Europe." Yeltsin went on to imply that Russian support for Serbia might go beyond the cautious diplomatic and humanitarian steps to which it has been limited until now.
