U.S. WARNS AGAINST MISSILE TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER TO BEIJING.

Washington has warned Russia and Ukraine not to sell SS-18 long-range missile technology to China, U.S. defense secretary William Perry said yesterday. According to Perry and other Pentagon officials, the United States has received information that China seeks the technology from Russia, ostensibly for rocket boosters to launch space vehicles. An unnamed Pentagon source said that the U.S. warning had been issued "at the highest levels as recently as last month." Perry also observed that the transfer of SS-18 technology to China would be a violation of both the START treaty and the Missile Technology Control Regime. A U.S. State Department spokesman indicated that the United States has no evidence of any such transfer already having taken place. Russian-built SS-18s have a range of over 7,000 miles and would give China the capability to strike the continental United States. (UPI, May 21)
