Because Russia isnot interested in peace in Chechnya and because formerly pro-MoscowChechens are furious that Moscow has been talking to DzhokharDudayev rather than to them, intense fighting is likely to breakout among the various Chechen factions, a Chechen journalist toldObshchaya gazeta in its August 17-23 issue. Viskhan Davletukayevsaid that the new fighting will be "cruel" and thatMoscow will use it as an excuse to crack down even harder on theChechens. Davletukayev left no doubt that he was equally appalledby Moscow–for its negotiating strategy–and at Dudayev’s forces,which he said were actively involved in the drug trade. He saidthat the "only way out" for people like himself wasto "fight both Dudayev and Moscow.
