A Khabarovsk area officer of Russia’s Federal Security Service said June 7 that foreign intelligence services remain active in the Russian Far East. Describing the situation as "under control," the official nonetheless said that foreign agents continued to seek political, military, and economic intelligence throughout the area. (Interfax, June 7) In mid-May a U.S. citizen was accused by regional intelligence officers of spying in Kamchatka. He denied the charges.
