Gareth Jenkins has been based in Istanbul since 1989, working as a journalist, author and analyst. He writes extensively on political, economic and security issues related to Turkey and the surrounding region. In 2001, he published a monograph on the political role of the Turkish military, entitled Context and Circumstance: The Turkish Military and Politics. His book on political Islam in Turkey, entitled Political Islam in Turkey: Running West, Heading East? (Palgrave Macmillan), will be published in spring 2008. Gareth Jenkins is a regular contributor to Jamestown publications.
Dr. Joost Hiltermann is the Deputy Middle East and North Africa Program Director of the International Crisis Group. He recently prepared studies on the looming conflict in Kirkuk and on one of Iraq’s Shiite Islamist parties. From 1994 to 2002 he served as Executive Director of the Arms Division of Human Rights Watch in Washington. He has authored two books: Behind the Intifada: Labor and Women’s Movements in the Occupied Territories (Princeton University Press, 1991) and A Poisonous Affair: America, Iraq, and the Gassing of Halabja (Cambridge University Press, 2007).
Murat Karagöz is First Counselor at the Turkish Embassy in Washington, DC. During his career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he has also served in posts in Sofia, Brussels and New York. Mr. Karagöz is a graduate of Istanbul University and later received his MA in Political Science from the City University of New York in 2007.
Dr. John C.K. Daly received a Ph.D. in 1986 in Russian and Middle Eastern Studies from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London, and is currently a Eurasian foreign affairs and defense policy analyst for The Jamestown Foundation. He has also been a commentator on current events for CNN, the Hudson Institute, the Middle East Institute, Press TV, National Public Radio, White House Chronicle, Al-Arabiyya, and the Christian Science Monitor, along with being a contributing editor for Vanity Fair on terrorism. Dr. Daly has also addressed CIA, NSA and DIA audiences on terrorism.
Ambassador Mark Parris served as U.S. ambassador to Turkey from 1997 to 2000. His career as a Foreign Service officer included posts in the Soviet Union, Israel and Portugal. Ambassador Parris also was a policy advisor for the U.S. State Department and National Security Council. He currently directs the "Turkey 2007" project at the Brookings Institution.
