The outcome of Russia’s presidential election on March 2 is all but predetermined; the real question is what happens afterward. In the last eight years, Russia’s domestic and foreign policy has been directed by one man only. How will President Putin’s successor interpret his role in the Kremlin: as a strong autocrat, a meek puppet, part of the so-called dream-team with the expected Prime Minister Putin, or as something else entirely? Understanding how the change in the Kremlin affects Russia’s domestic situation and external relations is essential for analyzing the wider implications not only for Russia’s future, but also for U.S. policy toward Moscow.
