PRIMAKOV ACCEPTS BALTIC ACCESSION TO EUROPEAN UNION.
Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 42
Russian foreign minister Yevgeny Primakov declared in Denmark yesterday that "Russia’s attitude to the Baltic countries’ possible membership in the European Union is positive." At the same time, Primakov ruled out Baltic accession to NATO as unacceptable and something that "would totally undermine our relations with NATO." Primakov’s statements as reported did not take a position on possible Baltic accession to the West European Union, the nascent defense arm of the European Union. (Itar-Tass, AP, February 27)
