SOVIET SOLDIERS APPEAL FOR HELP.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 33

Sixty of the approximately 600 soldiers who deserted the Soviet army in former East Germany have sent an appeal to U.S. president Bill Clinton for help in avoiding deportation back to Russia or one of the other newly independent states. The 60 say that they gave military-related information to Western intelligence officers and that they could face imprisonment if they are forced to return. Russia completed the withdrawal of former Soviet forces from Germany in 1994. (AP, February 14)
