GEORGIAN TERRORIST GROUP UNCOVERED.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 24

Georgia’s Internal Affairs and State Security Ministries have announced the arrest of 12 members of a "terrorist group" that was said to be planning the assassination of President Eduard Shevardnadze and other officials. Most of those arrested are former members of Georgian State Security’s Omega elite unit and of the Mkhedrioni paramilitary organization, both of which were disbanded in 1995. The underground group was in possession of arms, explosives, and maps of routes followed by top Georgian officials. The investigation, in progress since November, has thus far established that the group was working for certain Georgian opposition figures based outside the country. (Iprinda, Interfax, February 1)
