BAKU OMON REBELS SENTENCED.
Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 12
The Supreme Court of Azerbaijan yesterday sentenced 31 ex-officers of the Baku OMON to terms ranging from 2 to 14 years of severe-regime imprisonment. Four civilian accomplices received probation terms and two were cleared of the charges. The defendants participated in the OMON’s March 1995 rebellion against President Haidar Aliev and in subsequent subversive activities underground. Yesterday’s sentences bring to more than 300 the number of former OMON officers serving prison terms for participation in that rebellion. (Turan, Interfax, January 16)
