The U.S. "regrets" the recently announced sale of Russian S-300 anti-aircraft missiles to Cyprus. State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns said the deal introduced "a new and destabilizing military element on the island." A Russian official described the objections by the U.S. and others as "groundless" and "evidence that Russia’s Western competitors on the arms market lack confidence." (USIS, Interfax, January 6)
