CHAGALL AT LAST ACKNOWLEDGED IN HIS NATIVE BELARUS.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 118

An exhibition of works of Marc Chagall has opened for the first time ever in the artist’s native Belarus. The Minsk exhibition was put together by French museums and Chagall descendants from Israel. Chagall (1887-1985) was born and spent his youth in the Belarusan town of Vitsiabsk (Vitebsk), whose atmosphere he later rendered in his masterpieces. Until very recently, the Soviet authorities in Belarus and their successors disparaged or ignored Chagall’s art. (Western agencies, June 17)
