Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 218
Danish foreign minister and OSCE chairman-in-office Niels Helvig Petersen, in a visit to Russia, yesterday endorsed the right of all European countries, "and particularly of the Baltic states," to ensure their security through accession to NATO. Petersen indicated that he represented this position in talks with Russian foreign minister Yevgeny Primakov the preceding day. On that same day, President Boris Yeltsin’s foreign policy coordinator and chief spokesman, Sergei Yastrzhembsky, accused the Baltic states of "inflexibility" for declining the security guarantees recently offered by Yeltsin as a substitute for NATO membership.
