ENVER PASHA’S BODY TO BE RETURNED TO TURKEY FOR REBURIAL.

Tajik president Imomali Rahmonov agreed yesterday with Turkish president Suleyman Demirel in Ankara to return the remains of Enver Pasha to Turkey for solemn reburial there. Tajik authorities cooperated with Turkey to exhume the body, whose return is now tentatively scheduled for the August 4 anniversary of Enver’s death. (Anatolia news agency as cited by Reuter, May 6). Enver, the foremost member of the secular Young Turk group which led Turkey in World War I on Germany’s side against Russia, later resurfaced in Central Asia to resist its conquest by Soviet forces and unify the region’s peoples. He was killed by Soviet troops in 1922 and remains a legendary figure in contemporary Central Asia. Enver is also cited as a forerunner of pan-Turkic ideas.
