KORZHAKOV TRIES TO GET OUT THE VOTE

. Boris Yeltsin’s powerful but tight-lipped chief bodyguard, Lt. General Aleksandr Korzhakov, yesterday made an unusual appearance on national TV to urge his countrymen to vote in the elections to the Duma. He said that apathy would hand an "artificial victory" to the Communists and other opponents of Yeltsin. Korzhakov let it be known he will vote for Duma chairman Ivan Rybkin’s bloc, although his wife prefers Viktor Chernomyrdin’s "Russia is Our Home" bloc–both of which were set up at Yeltsin’s behest. Looking ahead, he warned that Yeltsin might not run for re-election with too many opponents in the Duma, but "nothing good will come of it" if he chooses not to run. (2)
