Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 145

The commander of Georgia’s Internal Ministry troops, Maj. General Giya Taradze has been dismissed, and his deputy, Colonel Akaki Barbakadze, has been arrested. Taradze is suspected of involvement in the August 29 attempt against the life of president Eduard Shevardnadze. (19)

The measure is the latest in a series of dismissals and arrests of State Security and Internal Affairs Ministry officers since the failed bomb attack on Shevardnadze. Most of these measures have been enforced by the internal affairs minister, Lt. General Shota Kviraya, who has displayed a firm loyalty to Shevardnadze.
