CONTRACT ON NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IN INDIA.

Russia’s Nuclear Energy Ministry has announced that it is close to signing a contract on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kudankulam, India, as part of Russian-Indian cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Russian specialists are already prospecting the Kudankulam area and estimating the local seismicity in their search for the best construction site. The contract is being drafted under a bilateral agreement of November 20, 1988, which calls for construction of a nuclear power plant with two light-water reactors of the VVER-1000 type. (10)

The total value of the deal has not been announced because some contract provisions are still incomplete. The VVER-1000 is a large-capacity serial reactor generally unfit for production of nuclear war materials.
