YELTSIN URGES INTERIOR MINISTRY TO STEP UP FIGHT AGAINST CRIME.

During a meeting with senior interior ministry officials, Yeltsinsaid that crime now represents a serious threat to the country’ssecurity and noted that past interior ministry efforts to fightit were inadequate, Russian television reported August 25. Hecalled on the ministry to "restore the purity of its ranks,"asked Interior Minister Anatoly Kulikov to speed up the reformof his ministry, and urged that more severe penalties be introducedfor violent crimes. Kulikov said that he planned to transfer manyauxiliary units to local control but would recentralize the ministry’sdetective and operational divisions.
