RUSSIAN COMMAND IN MOLDOVA TO END DETONATION OF SURPLUS AMMUNITION.

Lt. General Valeri Yevnevich, commander of Russian troopsin Moldova, announced on Tiraspol TV August 14 as cited by Russianand Moldovan agencies that his force will stop within 72 hoursthe detonation of expired and surplus explosives and ammunition.Yevnevich said that a recalculation of the amounts involved showedthem to be far smaller than had been announced. He also indicatedthat the decision was in deference to the Transdniester leadership’sreservations about the destruction of surplus ammunition (at leasta part of which the Transdniester forces hope to inherit). Theearly end of what had been billed as a large-scale undertakingpreparatory to the troops’ ultimate withdrawal to Russia throwsadditional doubt on the intent to withdraw.
