MOSCOW LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO OPPOSE NATO FORCES IN BOSNIA.

In order to prevent the introduction of NATO forces into Bosniawhich he and his aides said would lead to a disaster, Boris Yeltsinformally proposed to the five-country contact group that it initiatedirect talks with the warring parties in Bosnia, Russian mediareported July 27. Yeltsin’s press service said that the Russianpresident would call President Clinton to try to convince himon this score. (Initially, Interfax reported that Yeltsin wouldseek a US-Russian summit to press the Russian case.) The Russianforeign ministry said that Russian parliamentarians would usetheir contacts with American congressmen to make the same case.And in the best Soviet-era tradition, Russian media reported onlyforeign reactions opposing the US Senate resolution calling fora lifting of the arms embargo on Bosnia. Foreign minister AndreiKozyrev said while in Hanoi that the Senate’s step was "totallyincomprehensible" and would lead to "fueling an alreadyburning fire."
