New Federal SecurityService chief Mikhail Barsukov has had illegal contacts with theCIA and with other Western special services, retired KGB officerAleksandr Kazantsev told Moskovskiye novosti (no. 50).Kazantsev said that Barsukov had established these links in orderto obtain bugging devices to eavesdrop on Yeltsin’s opponentsand associates. The former KGB officer suggested that Barsukovwanted to use Western devices so that if these were found, thetargets of such bugging would not know who had planted them. Kazantsevwas unable to explain why Barsukov would need to make such contactsin order to obtain devices that are available on the open marketin the West.
