ELECTION RESULTS REMAIN IN DISPUTE IN ARMENIA.

Oppositionmembers of the Central Electoral Commission dismissed governmentclaims and media reports that Armenians had ratified the constitutionand elected a pro-government parliament, Noyan Tapan news agencyreported July 11. The opposition leaders said that they believedboth the results reported thus far, and those to be reported,have been almost entirely "’falsified. Remarkably, Russianelection observers joined Western ones in criticizing the wayin which the elections were carried out. And in a related development,the Armenian government closed down an opposition daily. The ostensiblereason was the paper’s debt to printers, but the papers editorsaid that other, pro-government papers had more debt but werenot being forced to close.
