Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 155
Dagestan is observing today a day of mourning for Finance Minister Hamid Hamidov, assassinated in a car bombing August 20, and four other persons killed in the same explosion. Hamidov, until recently a deputy to Russia’s Duma, was considered as Dagestan’s most prominent private entrepreneur. On the same day another bomb targeted the home of Nadir Khachilaev, leader of the Union of Moslems of Russia, who had the preceding week accompanied Aleksandr Lebed at the talks with the Chechen resistance leadership. Khachilaev and his family were not at home when the bomb exploded. Dagestani authorities said today that they had no clue in the two cases. (Itar-Tass, Interfax, August 21 and 22)
